Hot and muggy temperatures sum up the 10-day weather forecast here in Utah. It is not a good time for your air conditioner (AC) to break down.

But it happens.

You can count on Gillette Heating and Air for prompt and reliable service whenever you have repair issues with your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment. Our licensed technicians are available 24/7 to assist you. We know how to fix things!

While it’s tempting to pick up the phone and call in the pros, there are several common air conditioning problems that you can troubleshoot on your own. Not only can this save you time and money, but it can also help you better understand your AC system.

A little troubleshooting can go a long way toward saving you money and keeping your home comfortable.

Check the Thermostat

Before delving into the inner workings of your air conditioner, start with the basics. Ensure that your thermostat is set to the desired temperature and is in cooling mode. Sometimes, the issue might be as simple as a dead battery in the thermostat, so replace the batteries if needed.

Inspect the Air Filter

A clogged or dirty air filter can restrict airflow and reduce the efficiency of your AC system. It’s a good practice to check your filter once a month and change it at least every three months.

A clean filter helps extend the service life of your HVAC system. It also saves money: replacing a dirty filter with a new one can lower your energy use by up to 15 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Reduced energy use translates into lower utility bills.

Clear Debris from the Condenser Unit

The condenser unit is the outdoor part of your air conditioning system. Over time, it can accumulate dirt, leaves, and debris, affecting the airflow. When that happens, it can feel like your AC is broken.

Before calling a professional, turn off the power to the unit and clear away any foliage and other obstructions. Use a garden hose to clean the coils gently, but avoid damaging them with too much pressure.

Check for Refrigerant Leaks

Inspect the refrigerant lines for any signs of leaks, such as hissing sounds or ice buildup on the evaporator coils. If you suspect a refrigerant leak, contact Gillette Heating and Air right away—handling refrigerants requires special training and equipment.

Clean the Evaporator Coils

Dirt and dust can accumulate on the evaporator coils, reducing their efficiency. These coils are usually located inside your home’s air handler or furnace. Gently clean them with a soft brush or a coil cleaning solution. Be sure to turn off the unit’s power before cleaning or maintenance.

Examine the Circuit Breaker

A tripped circuit breaker can cause your AC to stop working. Check the circuit breaker panel and reset any tripped breakers related to your air conditioner. If the breaker continues to trip, it may indicate a more significant electrical issue.

Check the Vents

Blocked or obstructed vents can limit the airflow into your home, making it harder for your AC system to cool effectively. Check that all vents are open and unobstructed by furniture or curtains. Restricted airflow can significantly impact the performance of your air conditioner.
